Social medicine is characterised by knowledge of the importance of the determinants of health, social structure, environment, health system, working life and living conditions and health behaviours to health in different groups, the distribution of health in the population and social consequences of disease.
With skills in epidemiology, health promotion and disease prevention social medicine contributes with knowledge in public health work, global health, planning and evaluation of health care and in other sectors of society.
