Global agenda and the SDGs | Global health tools

A cornerstone in global health is the Agenda 2030 or the Sustainable Development Goals that were approved by all countries of the world in the summer of 2015.

There are 17 goals and 169 targets. Goal 3 specifically relates to health. However, many of the targets for other goals also relate to, and have an impact on health. The SDGs are to be reached by all countries by the year 2030.

These goals puts the entire world population on a path toward sustainable development. Learn more about these goals to see how they can be integrated into your specific course.

The UN campaign the Global Goals for Sustainable Development is a good website with a lot of graphics, where you can learn more about the goals and also learn how to take action.

The Millennium Development Goals or MDGs measured development from 1990 to 2015. These goals also aimed at reducing poverty and inequality in the world, however they had a more narrow scope and eventually only applied to countries with very few resources. The MDGs preceeded the SDGs, when it became clear that the world was not going to reach the eight Millennium Development Goals, a new set of goals and targets were drafted. As the final data from 2015 is gathered and analysed we will learn more about how the world did in terms of reaching these goals.
