Maria Isabel Smaradottir graduated from medical school in Reykjavik, Iceland, july 2016, finished her internship in Iceland in 2017 and is a licenced physician in Iceland, Sweden and Norway.
During ERASMUS exchange-year at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm in 2012, Maria contacted Lars Rydéns researchgroup in terms of doing a research project that would become the bachelor thesis in medicine in Iceland. The research project focused on biomarkers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and established cardiovascular disease. This was the start of the doktoral education, as Maria was registrated as a PhD-student i september 2014.
