He is Associate Professor in Public Health and senior researcher at Karolinska Institute. Since 2012 he is the study director of the Master Program in Global Health run at the Department of Public Health Sciences.
His scientific work includes forty-five publications, mostly original articles published in peer-reviewed international journals, but also two books, two book chapters, three scientific reports, and four popular science articles. He has also received various competitive research grants as principal investigator and co-investigator.
Joel has formal pedagogic training, and has been involved in numerous teaching activities as lecturer and course coordinator, mostly at postgraduate level at various institutions where he has accumulated nearly two thousand teaching hours.
He has been the main supervisor of one doctoral student and has also supervised forty-five master students from various universities and academic programs.

2. Injury epidemiology, mainly road traffic injuries
