Life at the single molecule level - Sunney Xie (Harvard University)
Professor Sunney Xie has pioneered the quantitative study of life at the single-cell and single molecule level. In an influential review recently, he showed how the central dogma of molecular biology can be studied as a quantitative phenomenon at the level of individual polymerases and ribosomes, and how single stochastic events can be amplified to change the phenotype of the cell. More recently, his group sequenced the genomes of single sperm cells to resolve long-range haplotypes, reveal sites of meiotic recombination and demonstrate aneuploidy of individual genomes.
