The Ethics unit at LIME at Karolinska Institutet works with philosophers at the Royal institute of technology and Stockholm university within the Stockholm centre for healthcare ethics.
CHE's area of activity encompasses ethical issues in healthcare and biomedical research. This includes ethical problems arising in various professions within healthcare, as well as ethical questions in the development, use, and testing of technology and methods for prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The area of activity also includes fundamental decisions by society regarding investments and priorities in healthcare.
CHE is engaged in undergraduate education, postgraduate education, research, knowledge building and information dissemination. The research includes both applied projects and more fundamental projects.
-Ethical issues become relevant at several levels within both healthcare and medical research. In healthcare, it can involve everything from care decisions for certain patient categories to priorities at an overarching level. Current issues include new applications of precision medicine, and the role AI should play in healthcare in the future.
-Many research ethics questions are constantly relevant. One track is to follow new technological developments. Another is to consider how to improve the conditions for research and promote a good research culture, says Gert Helgesson, professor of medical ethics and head of the Ethics unit at LIME.
