“What about genetics?”- an interactive and informal workshop

We in the Doctoral Programme in Epidemiology are in the process of developing a set of new courses in the field of genetics and epidemiology. This workshop presents three themes within which new courses might be developed. We invite you to this informal workshop and welcome your input in order to form these new courses.

Genetic and molecular epidemiology – a crash course for you?
Recent technical advances have paved the way for large-scale genome-wide analyses in prospective cohort samples leading to epidemiology moving into genetic and molecular fields. Hence, epidemiologists need to embrace genetics as well as molecular methods such as proteomics and metabolomics. But what is most interesting to learn for you? Come and tell us!

"GWAS - and then what?
So you have performed your GWAS analysis and found a bunch of associated SNPs. Then what? There is a wide range of methods allowing you to better utilize yours and others’ genetic data (at individual or summary level) to answer diverse scientific questions. Available methods include e.g.; Genetic risk scores, Mendelian randomization, GCTA, imputation, meta-analysis and LD score regression. But, are these methods of interest for you?"

Twin and family evidence of genetic factors influencing one, two, and many traits
Analyses with twin and family data is often convenient because of availability of data and simplicity of analyses. Here we present quantitative genetic methods to investigate 1) whether genetic sources are responsible for variation of a trait in a population, 2) if genetic and/or environmental sources cause two traits to co-occur, and 3) whether multiple traits share common underlying genetic/environmental sources. Illustrative examples will be shown of mental health problems with a focus on autism and related disorders.
