Valid measures of health and disease are requirements for methodologically sound research. The EPiCSS research group works to develop and validate research instruments such as mental health surveys, to validate registered diagnoses against complete medical records. As well as to develop better measures of the burden of disease to evaluate the health of populations and success of public health interventions.

Valid and reliable measurement is a prerequisite for unbiased research results. Public health surveys typically rely on brief screening scales, developed in clinical settings, to measure illness in the general population.

In this project, we have validated several psychiatric scales in general population samples in Stockholm County, which is our primary research setting.

Improving public health monitoring by estimating the burden of disease

Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project, the group is estimating the national burden of disease in Sweden and the importance of risk factors.

Research is ongoing on how to include socioeconomic position as an additional risk factor, not previously included in the GBD list. Collaboration with experts in Nordic countries as well as a network chaired by WHO Europe will enable comparison between countries and over time.

Data is continuously being collected from various Swedish sources, and updated to feed into the database hosted by the Institute of Health and Metrics in Seattle, USA, with which we have strong collaboration. A subnational study has been made comparing Stockholm County with the rest of Sweden, and ongoing work is planned to cover all Swedish County councils.

In collaboration with Public Health England we plan to develop analyses of local variation taking into account social position.
