Fysiologföreningen presents: Professor Jack L Feldman, "Breathing is more than inspiration"
Dr. Jack Feldman is a distinguished professor of Neuroscience at UCLA.
Over several decades he has been the leading figure in understanding the neural circuits for breathing. He has made several seminal discoveries on the organization and function of the circuits controlling breathing such as the discovery of the preBötzinger complex.
Breathing involves more than just the regulated rhythmic movement of air into and out of the lungs. Experiments delineating mechanisms underlying apneas, such as when we swallow, talk or free dive, and sighs, which we do 12 times/hour (!), as well as novel probing of microcircuits in the preBötzinger complex, have forced Dr. Jack Feldman to challenge the current paradigms for rhythmogenesis. In this seminar, he will discuss the relevant data and our current ideas about how respiratory rhythm is generated.
