Student portrait: Simon Shamass
Master's programme: Global Health
Country of residence: USA
Year of birth: 1985
Simon's background is in medicine and the Master's Programme in Global Health is his first step towards a career combining medicine and global health. He picked Karolinska Institutet for two reasons:
'Firstly, I have an attachment to Sweden because I was I born here and have family, so I always wanted to come back in some way. Secondly, the global health programme at Karolinska Insitutet is unique in that it is only one year and incorporates field work, both of which were important for me.'
The programme has met up to his expectations so far:
I have begun to build a foundation of knowledge about global health dynamics and started developing basic research skills.
One of his best memories from his first semester at Karolinska Institutet is the kräftskiva (traditional Swedish "crayfish party"), organised together with his Global Health classmates. The party marked the day when he realized that they had become a family rather than 'just' a class.
In ten years time he imagines himself working in some combination of clinical medicine and public health, splitting his time working and teaching in the US/Europe and in low-income countries.
