Title: Regulation of blood-brain/spinal cord barrier integrity and repair by Hedgehog-responsive astrocytes in the adult mouse CNS

We have discovered that the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway plays a previously unappreciated but critical role in maintaining BBB integrity. Using genetic approaches in mice, we have found that the Hh pathway is selectively active in a sub-population of astrocytes, and that signaling in these cells is required to maintain BBB integrity. We have also discovered that Hh signaling within these astrocytes is critical for repairing the BBB at experimentally-induced lesions that model those that occur in CNS diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis.
