Forskningsbeskrivning

Min forskning har huvudsakligen fokuserat på hälsoeffekter av icke-joniserande strålning, framförallt med inriktning mot kroniska sjukdomar som olika typer av cancer. För närvarande leder jag bland annat den svenska delen av en stor internationell fall-kontrollstudie av mobiltelefon-användning och hjärntumörer bland vuxna, den så kallade Interphone-studien, en motsvarande nystartad fall-kontrollstudie av hjärntumörer bland barn, Cefalo-studien, samt en fall-kontrollstudie av akustikusneurinom. Inom ramen för dessa studier studerar vi också en rad andra riskfaktorer för hjärntumörer, bland annat kopplingen till astma och allergier, infektioner, hormonanvändning och reproduktion, joniserande strålning, buller, med mera. Vi har också samlat in blod- eller salivprover och har extraherat DNA för analyser av samband mellan variationer i olika gener och hjärntumörrisk, samt betydelsen av samverkan mellan arv och miljö för sjukdomsrisken. Vi deltar aktivt i ett internationellt nätverk för hjärntumörepidemiologi, BTEC.

Inom området icke-joniserande strålning har vi också betydande forskning om extremt lågfrekventa magnetfält (ELF), exempelvis från kraftledningar och annan eldistribution. Vår forskning om effekter på barnleukemi, bröstcancer, neurodegenerativa sjukdomar, med flera, har fått stort genomslag i internationella hälsoriskbedömningar. Vi har gjort omfattande kartläggningar av förekomsten av elektromagnetiska fält i olika arbetsmiljöer, med särskild fokus på kvinnors arbeten.

En spin-off av forskningen om ELF har varit studier av cancer hos blinda, samt om skiftarbete påverkar cancerrisk. Vi har också intresserat oss för effekten av övervikt och fetma på cancerrisk, samt olika riskfaktorer för hematologiska maligniteter.

Vi deltar aktivt i internationella hälsoriskbedömningar och kunskapsutvärderingar, bland annat för WHO och EU, samt nationellt för bland annat SSI, FAS, och SBU.
