Om mig

Johan von Schreeb är kirurg specialiserad inom global katastrofmedicin. Han leder kunskapscentrum för katastrofmedicin inom forskargruppen Global Hälsa-Hälsosystem och Policy vid institutionen för Folkhälsovetenskap. Han har sen 25 år arbetat i katastrofer världen runt och var en av grundarna av svenska Läkare Utan Gränser/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). År 2007 disputerade han på avhandlingen "Needs assessments for humanitarian health assistance in disasters" och har sedan dess fortsatt att i samarbete med internationella organisationer som MSF, WHO och ICRC bedriva forskning inom området global katastrofmedicin. Han samarbetar med svenska myndigheter som Socialstyrelsen och är del av myndighetens bedömningsgrupp vars uppgift är att bedömma effekterna av nya katastrofer. Johan arbetar regelbundet i katastrofer, senast för WHO som expert inom traumavård för de som skadats i striderna runt Mosul i norra Irak, 2017. År 2014 koordinerade han internationella insatser för WHO i Sierra Leone under ebolaepidemin.

Forskningsbeskrivning

En katastrof definieras av resursbrist. Det råder brist på personal, kompetens, material och tid. Johan von Schreebs forskning utgår från utmaningar att trots resursbrist bedriva god sjukvård. Han har doktorander inom områden som inkluderar traumavård med begränsade resurser (Indien) optima behandling av krigsskador (Jordanien och Irak) Övervämningars effekter på hälsa och hälsosystem (Kambodja). Han är vidare bi-handledare till en doktorand som studerar i vilken mån kirurgi kan delegeras till andra personakategorier (Sierra Leone). Han studerar även den väst afrikanska ebola epidemins indirekta hälsoeffekter. I samarbete med WHO har han arbetat för att förbättra internationell medicinska insatser efter katastrofer och var medförfattare till den banbrytande publikationen "Classification and minimum standards for foreign medical teams in sudden onset disasters" (se länk nedan) Hans forskningsresultat  har även legat till grund för handböcker för vård av skadade, nu senast i "Handbook for management of limb injuries in disasters and conflict (se länk nedan) 

 

Pedagogiska meriter

Tillsammans med Anneli Eriksson har von Schreeb tagit fram en mängd nya utbildningar på institutionen. Sen 2013 ger de tillsammans med två europeiska universitet Erasmus Mundus Master kursen "Public health in disasters"

Den firstående kursen "Public Health response to disasters" ges under vårterminer 

von Schreebs grupp utbildar även svenska läkare och sjuköterskor på väg ut i fält för MSF och andra humanitära organisationer i kursen "Humanitarian Health Action" som är en 8 v kurs som delvis ges på distans

Den särskild valbara två-veckorskursen "Katastrofmedicin" ges varje termin för läkarstudenter.

Akademiska priser och utmärkelser

Utsågs i december 2014 av tidningen Fokus till "Årets svensk"

Mottog i december 2014 Prins Carl-medaljen av Kungen för framstående internationella humanitära insatser.
