Motor neurons and their networks in health and disease

2016-09-0908:30 to 17:30 Nobel Forum, Nobels väg 1Campus SolnaNeurovetenskap

Motor neurons are the final common pathway for all movement-related brain activity, including breathing, walking, speaking, chewing, swallowing or just finding our way. Motor neurons transform activity into movements by activating muscles and they are driven by specialized premotor networks in the spinal cord and brain. Motor neuron function is compromised in several lethal or severely debilitating conditions including spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy and even with aging.

This symposium will bring together Swedish and international speakers who have made significant contributions to the understanding of motor neuron function; their developmental regulation and molecular control, their circuit control from the spinal cord and brain, and disease mechanisms that lead to motor neuron dysfunction.
