Scholarships are awarded to: 1) support scholarly/scientific research, academic travel or the publication of scholarly/scientific work by women who have completed doctorates at any of the country’s universities and other institutions of higher learning and thereby demonstrated genuine talent for scholarship/science; and 2) to support dissertation work by women who have been accepted to postgraduate programmes at any of the country’s institutions of higher learning and shown genuine talent for scholarship/science.

Monrad-Krohn price for neurological research 2018

Monrad-Krohn's endowment to promote neurological research grants an award every year for outstanding neuroscientific research preferably within clinical neurology. Professors of Neurology at universities in Nordic Region can nominate candidates for the award prize. Publications must be written in a Scandinavian language, or English, German or French in order to be considered.

EFSD/MSD European research programme on new targets for type 2 diabetes

The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes and Merck, Sharpe & Dome invite proposals for their European research programme on new targets for type 2 diabetes. Areas of research emphasis may include:

•mechanisms to induce browning of adipose tissue;

•new targets for improving skeletal muscle or adipose tissue insulin resistance;

•bile acid biology as it relates to metabolic disease, including actions relating to glucose metabolism, lips metabolism, energy balance and related diseases;

•lipid metabolism as it relates to insulin action;

•mechanisms of glucose-dependent insulin and glucagon secretion.

Single non-profit institutions or groups of such institutions from Europe and associated countries may apply. Grants are worth up to €100,000 each for projects lasting one year or longer.

Global clinical trials fund - Alzheimer's Research UK

Alzheimer’s Research UK invites expressions of interest for its global clinical trials fund. This supports clinical trials that have the potential to be of benefit to dementia patients. The scheme covers the following:

•studies that aim to demonstrate target engagement, and phase I or phase II clinical trials undertaken to ascertain the potential safety and efficacy of novel or re-purposed drug-based interventions in human subjects;

•clinical trials of non-drug based, complex interventions;

•opportunities for research add-ons to ongoing clinical trials, such as biomarker add-ons.

Applicants based at established research institutions worldwide may apply. Applications must include at least one clinician and one academic investigator or a clinical researcher. Grants are worth up to £1 million per project.

The Louis Bonduelle Foundation invites applications for the Louis Bonduelle research award. This supports young researchers conducting research in the areas of nutrition or eating habits, regardless of the scientific discipline concerned. Candidates must be enrolled in institutes of higher education and under 35 years of age. The award is worth €10,000.

Postdoctoral fellowships—Cystinosis Research Foundation

The Cystinosis Research Foundation invites applications for its postdoctoral fellowships. These aim to attract qualified, promising investigators to establish careers in cystinosis research.

Priority will be given to named postdoctoral trainees. However, investigators who are already studying cystinosis can apply for a fellowship position with the expectation of attracting a suitable postdoctoral fellow within a year. Predoctoral students, who are already studying cystinosis, will be considered if funding is available.

Research grants— Thoracic Surgery Foundation  

The Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education invites applications for its research grants. These support the work of an early-career cardiothoracic surgeon who has completed their formal training and are seeking initial support for their original research project. Preference is given to either clinical or laboratory based investigations that are judged likely to generate data that will facilitate subsequent funding support for the applicant.

Any cardiothoracic surgeons who have completed a programme leading to certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, or its equivalent in a country outside of the US, or surgeons who will be certified by the grant start date of 1 July 2018 and who are within seven years of their first faculty appointment are eligible to apply. Applicants beyond seven years of their first faculty appointment may be considered under extraordinary circumstances.

Grand Challenges Explorations - Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Grand Challenges Explorations is an initiative where initial grants are for USD $100,000 and successful projects are eligible to receive follow-on funding of up to USD $1 million. Proposals are solicited twice a year for an expanding set of global health and development topics. Applications are only two pages, and no preliminary data is required. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies.

We are accepting applications on the following three topics:
• Novel Approaches for Improving Timeliness of Routine Immunization Birthdose and Healthcare Worker Skill in Low-Resource Settings;
• Healthy Minds for Adolescent Mothers: Achieving Healthy Outcomes for the Family;
• Innovations for Integrated Diagnostics Systems

Closing date: Wednesday, Nov 8, 11:30 am Pacific Time.
