Title: “Brown fat, forkhead genes and metabolic flexibility"

Activated brown adipose tissue offers a unique way to expend energy by converting chemical energy stored as ATP into heat. This leads to increased insulin sensitivity and over-all a healthier metabolic profile. In rodent models this is well established and in recent years more and more evidence are accumulating in support of an important metabolic role also in humans. In this presentation I will review some work we have done in relation to brown adipose tissue in mice and humans this will also include some recent data on how the forkhead transcription factors Foxk1 and Foxk2 coordinate metabolic adaptation during starvation and after exercise with focus on white and brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle.
