Quality management
The Biobank has an organization with explicit procedures for quality assurance. A quality management system, including a list of instructions regulates all processes at KI Biobank. The system is designed to meet the requirements in the SS-EN ISO/IEC 17025, the standard by which the methods of KI Biobank are ackredited.
Sample tracking and security
The management of all lab processes including storage and withdrawal are handled by a Laboratory Information Management System. All samples stored in KI Biobank are labelled with unique barcodes that allow automated procedures all the way from sample registration to aliquots in the freezers. Security and confidentiality of data are ensured by the use of data systems developed with a very high level of security with back up procedures and audit functions that protects for unauthorized access to sensitive data.
Accuracy
The accuracy, reproducibility and reliability of the laboratory procedures are ensured by use of a liquid handling robot, which aliquots DNA, serum and plasma from primary tubes into secondary tubes or plates.
Sample storage
KI Biobank stores biological samples in freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks. Temperature control during the processing of samples and the long-term storage is essential and determines the usefulness of samples in future analyses. The freezers are placed in rooms with backup power and cooling systems and are connected to a web-based alarm system. In case of an alarming change in freezer or liquid nitrogen tanks, personnel are notified by text messages.
