Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 7

A person has basic eligibility for third level education if he or she

1. has taken a second level qualification,

2. has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second level, or

3. has acquired essentially corresponding knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

The faculty board may permit an exemption from the requirement of basic eligibility in the case of an individual applicant, if there are special grounds.

2.1 Rules for eligibility at KI

An assessment of the student's general eligibility in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance shall take place before the application for admission is submitted. This assesment will be carried out by administrative officers at the doctoral unit within the university administration who decides on whether the general eligibility requirements are fulfilled. The applicant is given "Rules for doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet", which shall be read in its entirety before an application for admission to doctoral education is submitted.

KI has no requirements for specific eligibility.

Temporary regulations in accordance with the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education:

Any student seeking general eligibility for doctoral education who can prove that they have gained 120 credits (corresponds to 180 university credits) or equivalent before 1 July 2007 shall be granted general eligibility for doctoral education until 30 June 2015.
