High alcohol consumption in young adults is associated with increased mortality from suicide and premature disease. This has been shown by a national study carried out over 25 years ago on 50,000 national servicemen, who have been followed up by Peter Allebeck at various intervals. The study also reveals that use of cannabis by young adults more than doubles the risk of developing schizophrenia.
Other studies have demonstrated an association between learning difficulties and schizophrenia, and between learning difficulties and premature death, including suicide.
