EU Projects

EU funded projects at Karolinska Institutet

Researcher projects at KI financed by EU funds can be founded primarily in the EU's framework programmes (DG Research & Innovation) and within the EU's public health programme (Directorate General Health & Consumers).

The following four cornerstones comprise the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7):

  • Collaboration -projects that involve collaboration between research groups from a number of countries.
  • People - better known as "Marie Curie", a programme primarily for researcher mobility.
  • Ideas - also known as the European Research Council where funds are awarded to individual researchers or research teams on the basis of excellence. There are both Advanced Grants and Starting Grants.
  • Capacities - projects related to the building up of European research infrastructures.

During 2010, KI has participated in 43 FP6 projects and 154 FP7 projects (including 25 Marie Curie Fellowships). KI is the coordinator of 8 of the FP6 projects and 19 of the FP7 projects. Some 40 projects involving KI are due to start during the early part of 2011. These include four large projects with KI as the coordinator.

KI currently has six ERC Advanced Grants and five Starting Grants. A further three Starting Grants will begin during the first half of 2011.

FP7 also includes the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), which is the European Commission's and the pharmaceutical industry` combined venture for the production of new pharmaceuticals. KI is participating as a partner in seven of a total of 15 current projects. KI will be coordinating a large IMI project which will start during 2011.

Income from EU

EU income to Karolinska Institutet

Research income to KI from the EU appears to have slowed down during 2010. This is due to the fact that many projects ended during 2010 and that many new projects will not start until 2011.
