Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is a collective term that includes autism, Asperger's syndrome and other autism-like conditions.
It is estimated that about one per cent of all children and adolescents are affected by ASD. It is characterised by poor social awareness and interaction, impairment of verbal and non-verbal communication, and rigidity of thought affecting behaviour, interests and activity. The pattern of these component characteristics can vary between individuals.
