ERA 2010

External research quality assessment (ERA)

FINAL REPORT

The Board of Research has the overarching responsibility for the evaluation research quality at KI and delivered the final report to the University Board in October.

The ERA2010 report from the external review panels was delivered to KI in mid July by ERA main panel chair, professor Raivio. The ERA2010 report was emailed to KI leadership, chairs of department, and administrative heads of department and the leaders of research constellation for check of factual errors. Appendix 1, the finalized report from the external review board forms the basis for the final report to the University Board from the Board of Research.

The individual evaluations of research constellations will foremost be useful for strategic planning and continued work within the constellation and the department. As the individual evaluations mainly are value for internal work they are not included in the general report. The individual evaluations have been emailed to respective constellation leader and to the department(s) to which the constellation belongs. If someone is especially interested in reading these evaluations they will be available in paper format at the departments to which the constellations belong.

According to the quality plan signed by the University Board of Karolinska Institutet an assessment of the quality of research at Karolinska Institutet was to be performed using an international review panel board. The Board of Research is responsible for ERA has delivered the final report to the University Board to which ERA2010 forms the basis.

The result of ERA provides a tool for the KI leadership both at the university and the departmental level for strategic improvements in a transparent and informed fashion.

The KI leadership will use the information as ERA may suggest regarding

  • Changes in KI´s organization, including the balance of funding core facilities/departmental activities/researchers activities, respectively
  • Changes in the governance of the available infrastructure
  • Areas of emerging science and potential for renewal
  • Prioritization of areas for recruitment of young researchers

Scientific research quality was evaluated in a peer-review process, by invited internationally distinguished scholars. For evaluation purposes, the research at Karolinska Institutet and the Stockholm County Council was divided into nine subject areas. ERA shall review both the research quality and research supporting structures.
