The history of Karolinska Institutet
The history of Karolinska Institutet is very much the history of Swedish medicine. Karolinska Institutet (KI) was the first seat of learning to focus exclusively on medicine, and is today Sweden's only purely medical university.

KI integrated, for the first time in Sweden, the theory and practice of medical education and research, thus preparing the ground for much of the expert healthcare that modern Sweden is now able to provide.
Many of the discoveries made at KI have also been of great universal significance, including the pacemaker, the gamma knife, the sedimentation reaction (ESR), the Seldinger technique, and the preparation of chemically pure insulin.
