Epidemiology

Epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet

Epidemiology is the science of occurrence of diseases in the population. Originally the focus was on infectious diseases and on effects of nutritious deficiencies. During the middle of the previous century epidemiologists began to study cancer and cardiovascular diseases and also other chronic diseases. Major steps forward were made with regard to factors that play a role for disease occurrence and disease risk. Causal factors in environment and life style has successfully been studies and in parallel with the development of molecular technics an increasing number of genetic factors have also been studied in relation to disease occurrence. Epidemiologic methods is used successfully within clinical research to look at treatment results, prognosis, and side effects.
