Department of Neuroscience
The Department of Neuroscience incorporates research groups dealing with different aspects of the function of the nervous system, both under normal conditions and during different diseases. Research projects include a broad range of studies at the molecular and cellular levels, the network level and at the level of the overall organisation of the nervous system.
Much of the basic research carried out at the department is aimed at understanding the functional role of various neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, the ionic and biochemical mechanisms involved, the molecular basis of transmitter release, and the neurophysiology of neural networks controlling behaviour and brain function.
Extensive research is also carried out on the regulation of nerve cell growth and factors involved in neuronal regeneration and degeneration, and which are important in conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and spinal cord injury.
The department is also responsible for undergraduate teaching in a number of programs at the Karolinska Institutet. The main tasks involve teaching in neuroscience, as well as macro- and microscopic anatomy.
