The metabolic syndrome, i.e. abdominal fat deposition, raised blood fats and insulin resistance, is increasing worldwide.
Mai-Lis Hellénius is studying how different lifestyle factors, primarily physical activity and eating habits, can influence the development of the syndrome, and whether lifestyle changes affect the risk of future cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
The research group is also studying the underlying mechanisms, including how lifestyle affects the expression of genes in adipose tissue.
