Requirements for exchange studies at Karolinska Institutet

General Requirements

In order to be accepted as an exchange student at Karolinska Institutet the applicant must be enrolled at a university that has a written exchange agreement with Karolinska Institutet for the specific study programme of interest. Exchange students should be nominated by their home institution. The final decision on admission is made by Karolinska Institutet.

  • 60 ECTS credits (one year of study) at the home university
  • Basic computer knowledge

General requirements depending on language of instruction

Exchange students seeking admission to courses offered in English must provide evidence of their proficiency in the English language which should also be confirmed by a representative of the student's home university.

  • Equal to a TOEFL score of 550

Exchange students seeking admission to courses offered in Swedish must provide evidence of their proficiency in the Swedish language or another Scandinavian language.

  • Pass Tisus test or equivalent

Specific requirements may apply for courses, research-oriented projects and clinical rotations.

Courses

Most courses are full-time courses and require at least 40 hours of studies per week. Courses are most often offered in blocks and not in parallel, and hence, a student can only attend one course at a time. One study week is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits. The performance will be graded in accordance with the ECTS grading scale and on the basis of the studentīs fulfillment of the learning outcomes stated in the course syllabus.

Research-oriented projects

All projects require at least 40 hours of studies per week if they run full-time. One study week is equivalent to 1.5 ECTS credits. Projects can however be combined with courses and/or run in parallel with courses.

The performance will be graded in accordance with the ECTS grading scale and on the basis of the studentīs fulfillment of the learning outcomes stated in the course syllabus.

Clinical rotations

Some study programmes arrange a wide range of full-time clinical rotations in English and in Swedish within different specialties. A clinical rotation requires at least 40 hours of work per week if run full-time and a student can, if so, only attend one rotation at a time. Please note that there is only a limited number of places for clinical rotations and a study place can therefore not be guaranteed. Some of the study programmes offer fairly flexible starting dates meanwhile others have fixed rotation dates.

During a clinical rotation the student will be assigned to a clinical supervisor who will be responsible for ongoing instructions and supervision.
