The Stockholm research group for clinical and translational research of schizophrenia and psychoses
Schizophrenia is a disease that affects young people and leads to a chronic disease course with severe symptoms and impaired functioning. Research at Karolinska Institutet have shown a correlation between the disease and signs of neuro-inflammation.
Stockholm Network for Translational Schizophrenia Research aims to study the signs of inflammation in patients, first diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. They are recruited at three psychiatric hospitals and offered to undergo a thorough clinical, neurocognitive and neurological examination by neuroimaging, cognitive, genetic and electrophysiological methods. The overall aim is to study neuro-inflammation as a possible pathogenetic mechanism underlying the symptoms and functional impairments that characterize schizophrenia.
Other objectives are to identify risk factors, genetic and environmental, that contribute to the development and onset of schizophrenia, and finally to find compounds that are suitable for drug development targeting neuro-inflammation.
Stockholm Research Network for schizophrenia research has a steering group, Professor Lena Flyckt, Professor Lars Farde and Professor Göran Engberg, but also includes a large number of senior researchers, four graduate students and two postdocs.
