Jan Nilsson
Jan Nilsson gained his PhD in 2005 for a thesis on the health and quality of life of elderly people in low income countries.
His work consisted of everything from data gathering, where he carried out interviews with elderly and poor people in Bangladesh and Vietnam, to the presentation of results. As this work continued, Jan became deeply involved in the concept of "social capital". Having friends and family was a vital part of the quality of life of the people in the study. By such means, he could demonstrate that social capital affect health.
By original profession, Jan is a nurse and works today as lecturer and head of training at the Red Cross Institute in Stockholm.
