Carl Johan Sundberg

Carl Johan Sundberg's first doctoral project related to space physiology and how the heart, vessels and respiratory system are affected by weightlessness. After eighteen months, he switched project and began to study how exercise affects the skeletal muscle system. He gained his PhD for a thesis on this subject in 1993.

Today, Carl Johan is associate professor of physiology. He has continued his research into the affects of exercise on the muscles, where one interesting set of questions relates to how the activity of the genes is controlled during exercise.

In addition to his research, Carl Johan devotes much time to communicating research results. He is leader of the academic Unit for Bio Entrepreneurship (UBE) which works in inspiring and training students, researchers and clinics within innovation and entrepreneurship. Carl Johan has also initiated the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), which is Europe's largest interdisciplinary meeting forum for researchers, decision makers, students and scientific journalists.
