Cardiovascular disease, an area of intensive research, is the commonest cause of death. A vascular biology centre has e.g. been established at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB), Karolinska Institutet, where four research teams are concentrating on basic research into a number of vascular biology issues.
Ulf Eriksson's group has identified a unique mechanism regulating the blood-brain barrier, and also found that a cancer drug can reduce damage to this barrier following a stroke. In addition, this group has identified a mechanism in blood vessel walls that allows for the tissue-specific uptake of free fatty acids.
