Health economics and more specifically economic aspects of health system performance at the system level, hospital level and clinical department level by conducting national and international efficiency and productivity of health care institutions.
The research applies theories and techniques of economics and management to various aspects of health system performance and health care reforms. Most health systems are faced with challenges such as reduced economic growth, deficit in public budgets and an increasing gap between what can be achieved and what the society is able and willing to pay. This development increases the demand for analysis of the determinants for an efficient use of resources in health systems. I am part of a Nordic group of health economists, the Nordic Hospital Comparison Study Group (NHCSG), comparing the overall availability, utilisation, cost development and efficiency in health care provision within and between the Nordic countries and the underlying reasons to differences (such as regulations, health care financing and organizational issues). I am also part of a research project called European Health Care Outcomes, Performance and Efficiency (EuroHOPE), a project that belongs to the seventh Framework Program (FP7) of the European Commission that focuses on comparing the costs and outcomes of five tracer diagnosis in the Nordic countries, the Netherlands, Scotland, Italy and Hungary.
In my dissertation I pay special attention to the benchmarking of university hospital performance including research and teaching activities and to analyse effects of organizational aspects on the productivity, efficiency and effectiveness of specific clinical departments.
