An evaluation of the research quality at Karolinska Institutet (KI), ERA2010 (External Research Assessment), will be performed during 2009-2011.

The evaluation will be carried out by invited external experts and be performed at the research group level. The Board of Research has the overarching responsibility for the evaluation project ERA2010. The Project Group in association with the Reference Group is responsible for the evaluation process.

For evaluation purposes, the research at Karolinska Institutet and the Stockholm County Council is divided into nine subject areas:

For each of the 9 research areas to be evaluated, five Area Coordinators have been selected to cover the different expertise within each research area. The Area Coordinators form a link between the Project Group and the researchers at KI/SLL.

A panel of international experts is appointed for each of the nine subject areas. Each panel will be led by an international Chair, supported by the Vice-Chair, in most cases a representative from a Swedish university who also can assist in matters that require knowledge and insight in e.g. Swedish universities and research-funding practices. All panels are headed by the Main Panel Chair, Professor Kari Raivio, former Dean, Rector and Chancellor at the University of Helsinki. Professor Raivio has extensive experience of research evaluations in Scandinavia and Europe.
