Doctoral education
Doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet (aiming for either a licentiate or Ph.D. degree) is largely based on the student's personal research project, which is complemented with courses and clearly specified knowledge requirements. It requires normally a total of fours years' full-time Doctoral education to acquire a Ph.D. degree.
Studies can be pursued in parallel with clinical practice or the like, but must be concluded in four years (for licentiate degree) or eight years (for a PhD degree). Progress is checked annualy, and there is a more thorough half-time control (or licentiate examination) after the equivalent of two years' full-time study. The PhD is awarded on the submission of a thesis subject to its passing a public defence. A licentiate degree is defended at a licentiate seminar.
