Most people carry the infective agent cytomegalovirus (CMV) without becoming ill. However, people whose immune defence is compromised can develop serious CMV disease. The research group has been able to show that cytomegalovirus is also a common cause of rejection in patients who have received transplants. Further, the virus may be involved in several common diseases, such as chronic inflammatory diseases and cancer. The virus infects many types of cell and produces many proteins that control the function of the infected cell, helping the virus to escape detection by the immune system.
