Bill Gates receives honorary doctorate
On 23 January 2008, Bill Gates became an honorary doctor at Karolinska Institutet. See footage of Bill Gates receiving his cap, ring and diploma at a special conferment ceremony in honour of him and his wife Melinda French Gates.
Bill and Melinda Gates were appointed honorary doctors in April 2007 for their contributions to global health and, in particular, to the improvement of health and healthcare in the third world. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation finances research in a number of fields, including the production of a vaccine for HIV/AIDS and malaria.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded in 2000 and which now has assets in excess of 30 billion dollars, has contributed 7.8 billion dollars to date in support of research and healthcare projects in the third world.
