Jussi Taipale's research group studies the molecular mechanisms behind the development of cancer, including gene expression. Important questions it seeks to answer are why such a large number of genes are needed for cancer to develop, and why different types of gene are mutated in different forms of the disease.
What all cancer forms have in common is abnormal cellular signalling, although this varies from one cancer form to another. The molecular mechanisms behind colon cancer, for example, are not the same as those responsible for skin cancer.
