The study of blood vessel formation is an important aspect of modern experimental cancer research. Tumours need blood vessels to supply them with oxygen and nutrients. The focus of research in this field is to understand how new blood vessels are formed. This would enable doctors to prevent them growing into the tumours.

Through his work on animals, Lars Holmgren has discovered a previously unknown signal pathway in the cells. He has demonstrated that by blocking this pathway via vaccination it is possible to protect the animals from cancer.
