Stem cells - immature cells able to form effectively any kind of cell in the body - have given scientists hope of discovering new sources of tissue for transplantations and cell therapy in the treatment of injury and disease.

Researchers at KI were amongst the first to successfully study cerebral and neuronal stem cells, and since then their achievements have included the in vitro manipulation of stem cells to form dopamine-producing cells.
