Unit of Upper Gastrointestinal Research
The Unit of Upper Gastrointestinal Research (UGIR) includes Jesper Lagergren´s research group and Pernilla Lagergren´s research group(a total of 36 individuals have activities within the unit). The unit originates from surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and bile ducts), and conducts clinical research addressing diseases and surgery of these organs. The focus is on cancer research, particularly oesophageal cancer. The aim is that our research will contribute to a decreased incidence, increased life expectancy and better quality of life for people who suffer or undergo surgery.
SIMSAM Node
The unit has been selected as one of six nodes in which the Swedish Research Council invests to provide world leading research based on data from Swedish registries. This initiative is entitled the Swedish Initiative for Research on Microdata in the Social and Medical Sciences (SIMSAM).
In the comprehensive external evaluation of Karolinska Institutet's research quality (External Research Assessment = ERA) our unit got the highest possible score: "Outstanding", in the research field cancer research.
Jesper Lagergren is also a tenured professor at King's College London.
Pernilla Lagergren is the youngest professor at Karolinska Institutet, and its youngest female professor ever.
