Research Focus and Visionary Strategies
The group is dedicated to translational research on cellular and molecular processes in peripheral vascular disease, with an intense focus on mechanisms related to thromboembolic carotid disease and stroke, pathogenesis and epidemiology of abdominal aortic aneurysms, vascular repair processes and inflammation in association with interventional procedures and pulmonary hypertension. The overall depth and focus of this research and the explicit ambition to combine advanced experimental research with clinically relevant issues holds a strong and unique position in academic vascular surgery both nationally and internationally.
The research program is dedicated to develop future care of patients with peripheral vascular disease for example by; improving diagnostics and selection of patients for intervention (aneurysms, carotid disease), improve longterm patency of vascular interventions by preventing intimal hyperplasia, improve pharmaceutical treatment for postintervention thrombosis and plaque instability, improve treatment of pulmonary hypertension, apply antiinflammatory strategies to overcome graft failure. In building a strong translational platform, the projects are also anticipated to create a foundation for the training of future academic leadership within KI and the Karolinska University Hospital.
