Impairments of skeletal function and cardiac muscle function occur in several common and serious diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart failure and systemic inflammatory diseases.
Individual mature cells are being studied with the aid of a number of advanced physiological methods in order to understand how muscle cells normally function and how they are affected by different disruptive factors. Improved understanding may eventually lead to new treatment principles for large groups of patients.
