Programme information
The Study Programme in Medicine at Karolinska Institutet involves great student responsibility for the learning process. The study programme is outcome-based and major emphasis is placed on independent study, group work and seminars as well as independent project work and electives. Basic sciences and clinical sciences are integrated throughout the courses although the first 2 years are more basic science oriented and the last 3.5 years mainly clinically oriented. Scientific and professional development is an important part of the curriculum. Patient case histories will often form the basis of instruction. Most of the course literature is in English.
The last 3.5 years of study take place at one of our many teaching hospitals and in primary healthcare. Students participate in the practical care of patients in health centres and on hospital wards under the supervision of specialized and professionally active doctors, who will also be responsible for theoretical training. The programme requires full-time studies (equivalent to 40 hours/week). The clinical courses include both theory and practical training. Students can only participate in one course at a time.
