Georg Klein
Professor emeritus of Tumour Biology at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology.
Georg Klein was born in Hungary in 1925 and came as a refugee to Sweden after the Second World War. He received his Ph.D. in 1951 and was professor in Tumour Biology at Karolinska Institutet between 1957-1992. He is working as professor emeritus since 1992. In addition to his research George Klein is also a writer and has published several books.
Georg Klein's research focus on immunology, virology and genetic aspects of tumor biology. An example of his pioneering efforts include cancer immunology and studies of how genes in normal cells can suppress cancer cell malignant behavior. He has also done extensive studies of Epstein-Barr virus and its role in Burkitt's lymphoma.
George Klein and his wife Eva Klein have together laid the foundation for Sweden's prominent position in cancer research.
