Summer Course in Shanghai, China
Students at Karolinska Institutet are welcome to apply to the summer course on modern China at Nordic Centre at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, since Karolinska Institutet is one of the 20 Nordic university members.
Introduction to Modern China, 8-26 July 2013
- An orientation course for students with limited knowledge about China
- Choose between the tracks Chinese economy and Chinese politics
- The course is given in English
- Karolinska Institutet will distribute 3 of a total of 70 places
- The course is free of charge
Participation in the course equates to 5 higher education credits, but it is not possible to receive credit for these at Karolinska Institutet. Students, who are eligible to receive study aid (studiemedel) from CSN can however, apply for study aid for this course.
You are responsible for the cost of
- Travel
- Visa application
- Lodging in a shared double room
- Local costs such as meals on campus, internet and computer use
Some reimbursement is paid to students who have participated in the summer course after submitting a travel report.

Qualifications
To apply to this course, you must fulfill the following by the time of applying
- Be a fulltime student at Karolinska Institutet
- Have completed at least 60 higher education credits at Karolinska Institutet
- Students on advance level should have completed 30 higher education credits at KI
Students who are nominated to exchange studies at Fudan University are given preference.
Application
Fill in the application form (below). Final date to apply is 18 March 2013.
In addition to the completed application form, please attach:
- An extract from Ladok of your completed courses and higher education credits up to and including the autumn semester 2012
- A letter of motivation approximately one page in length, written in English

Selection criteria
Selection is done based on an overall assessment of the following criteria:
- Study results
- Motivation for participation in the course as well as ability to represent KI well and to undertake these studies
- Engagement in student organizations, committees within KI or host for incoming exchange students (indicate any particular merits you wish to highlight at the end of your letter of motivation)
- Complete application, correctly filled-in with all attachments
In the middle of March, the Board of Higher Education will select three candidates and three possible reserve candidates. On 31 March, the decision will be sent to Nordic Centre, which will make a decision regarding possible reserve admissions and inform admitted students.
Write a travel report
When returning from the summer course at Fudan University, you are expected to write a travel report about your experiences and impressions. The report should be sent by e-mail to Monika Berge, see contact details below.
When you have submitted your travel report, you will receive a 1000 SEK reimbursement from Karolinska Institutet. Please state your name, contact details and bank account details in the form on the following link:
