As the most complex organ in the body, the brain offers a particular challenge to scientists. By studying the genetic architecture of diseases affecting the brain and spinal cord it is possible to reveal biological pathways involved in disease etiology.

Understanding the environmental factors associated with increased and decreased risk for disease allows scientists to develop interventions. By combining these areas -neurogenetics and epidemiology - researchers can effectively address the gene versus environment interaction.

The extensive healthcare registers, human tissue bio banks and the population based studies in Sweden offer a rich resource to this field.
