Half time controls
Quick guide to half time controls for the Department of Public Health Sciences
Supplement to: Rules for doctoral education at Karolinska Institutet (Dnr 1-133/2013).
About 4-6 weeks before the half-time seminar the Ladok extract is to be reviewed by the director of post-graduate studies (Ass Professor Marie Hasselberg) to check whether the student meets the study requirements. For postgraduates admitted to the subject "medical science" a minimum of 7.5 university credits (5 credits) must be earned from the basic science courses before the half-time control. For postgraduates admitted to subjects other than "medical science" a minimum of 15 university credits (10 credits) must be earned before the half-time control.
The principal supervisor and PhD student are responsible for arranging the half-time control. On the proposal of the supervisor, the head of department appoints an examination board comprising three impartial male and female PhD researchers with adequate knowledge of the subject and without ties to the project. An email is to be sent to the director of post-graduate studies, Marie Hasselberg in which the supervisor:
- describes the expertise of each one of the committee members
- declares that there is no conflict of interest
See under KI's rules for postgraduate education under heading 6.1.3 on page 20 or the KI website, under Postgraduate education/Half-time control for more information.
The principal supervisor and PhD student must ensure that the three members of the examination board receive the necessary documentation in good time prior to the half-time control (at least three weeks beforehand). Details of what needs to be made available in the documentation and at the half-time control, as well as what is to be discussed, can be found in KI's rules for postgraduate education.
The half-time seminar is to be held in public and announced internally at KI: (on the department's website, go to the external or internal website, click at Announce a calendar event and follow the instructions and click at the Department of Public Health)
The seminar starts with a presentation by the PhD student to be held in English.
A completed and signed original review form from the half-time control is to be submitted to Marita Larsson (Widerströmska 3rd floor) for registration in Ladok.
