Programme overview - the doctoral programme in development and regeneration

Purpose and aims

Developmental biology and regenerative medicine are key subject areas at KI. The amount of ongoing research and educational activities are continually expanding to attract the best students, researchers and teachers both nationally and internationally delivering highest standards of basic and clinical research. A vast multidisciplinary subject, DevReg aims to help students obtain a comprehensive view of the subjects and facilitates close contact with key experts in the field.

Orientation

Developmental biology, cell signalling and regenerative medicine seek to investigate and develop cells, tissues, organs and biomaterials, alone or in combination, to repair, replace or enhance biological function that have been lost due to congenital abnormalities, injury, disease or aging. Methodologies to study translational control are extensive and knowledge of both molecular and computational components are of interest, as is model systems from different species. Such knowledge increases understanding of basic processes of importance for organisms and disease development. Tissue engineering approaches with cells have been shown to be efficacious in repairing tissues, and recently some approaches have reached clinical practice.

Target audience

The program is designed to embrace the whole biological process, from basic knowledge of the cell to research translation into the clinic. Our intention is to attract a heterogeneous group of basic and clinical researchers, as well as those at Master’s and post-doctoral levels. We know students appreciate and benefit from this combination, as well as involvement of those from other specialities.

Presentation of research training activities

A goal of the program is to aid clinicians with the adjustment into researcher, and give basic researchers the opportunity to come into contact with clinical researchers and their specialisation. We will deliver a professional, competitive, multidisciplinary, innovative, high-value course curriculum to integrate new medical knowledge and technological advances towards health care; foster initiatives from students and encourage them to collaborate and devise creative enterprises to become innovative future scientists, leaders, company developers, social entrepreneurs and teachers; and select modes of scientific communication and tools together with web-based resources containing “state of the art” knowledge, and teaching and learning information for target groups and stakeholders locally and internationally.
