On 1 July Carl-Fredrik Wahlgren took up his new appointment at KI as Vice-Dean for collaboration with Stockholm County Council (SLL) with special focus on education at Karolinska University Hospital.

SLL is KI’s biggest collaborative partner and a very important one as regards the basic conditions for KI to be able to carry on clinical research and education. A large proportion of the workplace-based education takes place at Karolinska University Hospital.

He also has a wide contact network in KI’s education organisation and has since previously a commission to work with these questions on KI’s behalf. Clarifying and expanding this commission and linking the work to the Board of Higher Education feels perfectly natural at the important stage at which we find ourselves today,” says Dean of Higher Education Annika Östman Wernerson.

Because health and medical care in Stockholm is undergoing several extensive changes, the prerequisites for KI’s operations and activities are also changing. One of the major pieces of this transformation puzzle is that Karolinska University Hospital will be reorganised according to a new care model with themes and functions instead of clinics and that much of the out-patient care will move out of the hospital.

There is a great need for the new care landscape to ensure that there are enough workplace-based education places of high quality, learning environments that enable inter-professional learning (meaning that students in different professions can learn from each other and together), and clinical training environments. The availability of teachers and supervisors who are competent in both their subjects, science and teaching is another key question.

In his new role as Vice-Dean, it is among other things the items listed above that Carl-Fredrik Wahlgren will be devoting his time to. The Vice-Dean reports to the Dean of Higher Education, Annika Östman Wernerson, and is co-opted onto the Board of Higher Education. The Vice-Dean’s assignment is equivalent to a half-time position and to begin with the appointment is for the period until 31 December 2017.

Carl-Fredrik Wahlgren is Professor of Dermatology and Venereology at KI, specialising in education.
