About me

  • • Medical Director, Family Medical Practice, International Clinic, Hanoi, Vietnam
    • Associate Professor, Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet
    • Honorary Professor, Hanoi Medical University

Research

  • My main area of research is “how people can use antimicrobials with optimal effect and minimal resistance development”.

In 2003, I defended my PhD thesis at Karolinska Institute titled “Antibiotic use and resistance Assessing and Improving Utilization and Provision of Antibiotics and Other Drugs in Vietnam”. (http://diss.kib.ki.se/2003/91-7349-630-8/). We have then followed the antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance situation in Vietnam.

In 2000-2002 I was the joint national coordinator for another the EU-funded RCT assessing antimicrobial use and resistance among 3200 children in four communities in Peru and Bolivia where we found high and increasing rates of E. coli resistance to common antibiotics.

Since 2011 I have surveyed Hospital acquired infections (HAI) and Carbapenem Resistant Enterobacteriasae (CRE) in Vietnamese hospitals. One study among 2233 patients in 12 Vietnamese hospitals showed that 52% were colonized with CRE. Being colonised has significant correlation to HAI, increased time of hospital care, increased crude mortality and costs. An admission CRE screening and cohort care project in pediatric ICU's could significantly decrease CRE acquisition from 90% to 48%, HAI incidence, duration of hospital stay and costs. I have worked with Vietnamese MoH to assess IPC measures as basis for policy making. Now implementing an EU project, JPI-AMR admission and discharge CRE screening, cohort care in hospital and a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to decrease CRE transmission in households and community.

From 2006 to 2010 I was the Principal Investigator for “A RCT to assess antiretroviral treatment strategies in relation to adherence, resistance and virological failure” (DOTARV) implemented in Quang Ninh, Vietnam. My research students in the project, Dr. Do Duy Cuong defended his thesis in October 2012 with the title: “Antiretroviral therapy among HIV-infected persons in North-eastern Vietnam: Impact of peer support on virologic failure and mortality in a cluster randomized controlled trial” http://publications.ki.se/xmlui/handle/10616/41092 He is now head of the Infectious Disease Unit in Hanoi’s largest hospital Bach Mai. Dr. Vu Van Tam, defended with: Enhanced Antiretroviral Treatment support in relation to Quality of Life and Virological failure in low-income setting: a cluster RCT in Quang Ninh, Vietnam. http://publications.ki.se/xmlui/handle/10616/41357 He is now head of Uong Bi Hospital Infectious Disease Unit. We have also done RCT in pediatric and adolescent HIV cohorts to improve ART adherence and decrease virological, immunological and clinical treatment failure in HCMC, Hanoi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh.
